CN13 - Santander - Santillana del Mar - 37 Km

Itinerary

You will leave Santander from the square dedicated to Eguino and Trecu Bishop, located next to the Cathedral. Continue on Calle Calvo Sotelo, Calle Burgos, Alameda Segunda and Cuatro Caminos. From this last point, you will keep going on to Hospital de Valdecilla, passing by it and will leave the city centre via Cajo Avenue until you get to Campogiro fork, where you will continue straight on heading towards Oviedo. The Way passes by Capón, leaving the industrial area to the right, and continues to San Lorenzo Church, located to your left in Alto de Peñacastillo. From here, you will turn right via Calle de Adarzo and 200 m ahead, you will leave it turning left after crossing a bridge over the railroad, to continue on a path that goes parallel to the railroad. To do this, you need to overcome a narrowing under the viaduct that gives access to an industrial area. At the end, you will go out next to level crossing, going up to the right and entering Lluja Borough.

Keep going straight on and go across the lower district in the borough to then get to the end after 500 m. Then, you will turn left going down for 100m to take a path to the right that goes parallel to the railroad, going through the underpass twice. You will get to another level crossing and before crossing it, you will turn right on a path that goes under the highway. After crossing, you will get to a local road, turning left and continuing for 400 m before reaching a fork. Here, you will turn left and walk for another 250 m to get to a fork where you will turn left. Later on, you will go through Bezanía Borough and will leave it behind to get to the road from San Cibrián to Bezana. Next to a large black poplar you will turn left, walking on a road for 1,8 km until you get to the intersection where Santa Cruz de Bezana Church is located.

You will continue the journey leaving from Santa Cruz de Bezana Church, going straight on in the intersection. Later on, you will pass by the cemetery, located on the right side, and continue for 350 m until you get to a fork, where you will turn left. This way will take you to Mompía, where you will pass by Rosario Church and then take the CA-303, next to the p.k. 1. When you reach it, turn left on a bicycle lane towards the bridge over the railroad and Mortera halt; keep going straight on to the roundabout next to a clinic and a gas station, where you will turn right to take the CA-304 heading towards Boo de Piélagos. After 1 km, you will leave this road turning right via El Vivero Borough. You will get to a level crossing and, after passing it, you will find a fork where you will turn left, next to Cuco Stream. On your right side, you will see La Picota Mountain. Going through El Monte Borough, you will be able to see Boo de Piélagos Church in the distance. Once you get to the temple, you will leave it to the left and go through El Pozo Borough to get to the CA-231, coming from Liencres. Now, turn left going up towards Boo de Piélagos. After crossing the bridge over the railroad, you will leave the road and turn right on a byroad going down.

On this byroad you will get to Mogro Estuary, the place where there was a boat to help the pilgrims cross to the other side. Later on, you will get to a pass under the railroad on your right; continue straight on and do not take the underpass. Now, the way heads south and goes up La Barquera Borough. After this, you will access a path that goes on bordering a eucalyptuses plot. On its end, you will get to a top where there is a residential area; go through it, turning left first and then right, on the main street, to take a path on the other side of the residential area, adjacent to Santander-Torrelavega highway. When you get to the roundabout next to the highway, you will turn right going parallel to it and getting close to the riverbank, where the way heads south again after passing under the highway. Now, you will continue on a beautiful promenade with benches. Bordering the river and soon after, the way separates to the left and joins a byroad turning to the right, towards Santa María Church, in Arce.

Some metres after passing by the church, you will find a street on the right that leads to the houses in Arce and to the N-611. Once you get to the national road, you will turn right heading towards Oruña, passing by a gas station and getting to an intersection where you will turn first to the left and then to the right, to get to Cinco Ojos Bridge (built in the 16th Century) over the river Pas, located next to Santa Eulalia Church, in Oruña.

Once you have crossed the bridge, you will find on your right a park and you will keep going on next to it until you pass under the road and get to the CA-323. Continue turning to the right on that road heading towards Mogro. Going on parallel to the river, you will leave the road after 2,5 km, once you have passed over the highway and the Santander-Oviedo railroad, turning left on a land surrounded by banana trees next to Virgen del Monte Chapel. From this sanctuary you will continue on a path located on the other side of the local road and in front of the access to the chapel. Keep going on and you will get to one of the first boroughs in Mogro, La Mortera. On its end, when you get to Cabezón Borough, you will start seeing the tower of San Martín Church, and will go towards this temple.

You will leave Mogro from the church, turning left on a street via El Desierto Borough. You will pass by the last houses in Mogro and Fuente de la Cuela as you keep ascending towards the cemetery. Later on, you will find a fork where you will turn right, bordering Socueva streambed and continuing straight on towards the local road of Bárcena de Cudón. Here, you will turn left and continue on the road, leaving it after 300 m and taking the CA-325 to the right, heading towards Miengo.

Going through Humilladero, you will start descending as you enjoy an amazing view of the Cantabrian Sea and Liencres Beach. At the end, you will find a fork located next to a house, where you will turn left via Miñazo Borough and then you will take a byway and turn left going through Carriazo Borough. Finally, you will get to the CA-232 on an intersection where you will find the sign “Canteras de Cuchia”.

In front of you and on the other side of the road, you will see two houses forming a street; go through it to get to a path parallel to the piping from the Solvay factory, located in Barreda, on the lower basin of river Besaya. Going down you will see San Martín de la Arena Estuary on the left and also Suances on the distance. Continue and you will get to Cudón, where you will be able to visit San Esteban Church.

Leaving Cudón, you will take a path and follow the piping of the Chemical Factory, getting to an industrial area after 3 km. Next to the first industrial unit, you will turn left to take a promenade. You will follow this path towards El Regato de las Anguilas Hostel and then to Requejada Station. From here, the route follows the road to a roundabout with a bison statue and then keeps going straight on. 1,2 km after, on a new roundabout, you will turn right to cross the bridge over the river Besaya, leaving the Solway Factory to the right and get to Barreda roundabout, where there is a statue of San Francisco de Asís.

Again, you will have two options. The first one is the original and historical way, the one that used to cross San Martín de la Arena Estuary by boat, from Mogro to Cortiguera, and from here, the pilgrims continued passing by Ongayo, Puente Avios, Camplengo and Santillana del Mar. As the boat is no longer available, pilgrims must cross the estuary via Barreda, being option B 11 km longer than A. The two options are:

a)      Barreda – Viveda – La Pereda – Camplengo – Santillana.

From the roundabout, turn right on the CA-132 and continue for 500 m until getting to the CA-340 (to the left), which will lead you towards Camplengo after passing by Viveda. This is which is considered as the “short option” (5,5 km), but it is also harder than the other option.

b)      Barreda – Viveda – Hinojedo – Ongayo – Puente Avios – Camplengo – Santillana.

From the roundabout, turn right on the CA-132, heading towards Suances and walking on the sidewalk. 2 km after, enter the CA-341 to your left, which will lead you towards San Saturnino Church, in Hinojedo, after passing by a mansion.

Continue on the road towards Ongayo, and once you get to the village, you will enter via San Roque Street to ascend to Santiago Church (from the 10th Century).

You will leave the church to the right and go up for some metres until you get to a path on a higher part. Here, you will turn left to get to La Lastra Street, where you will turn right towards the road, next to Los Remedios Church. Going up the road to the right you will leave it after 100 m, turning left via Pedrosas Street; later on, you will turn left on a local path that starts next to a ruined house. This path goes down to San Andrés Church, in Puente Avíos.

Next to the church, and leaving it to the right, you will find a fork and turn left on a byroad that goes through Toranzo Borough and then, after 1,5 km, leads to the CA-342 towards Camplengo. Once you get to the local road, you will turn right and continue on it until you get to Camplengo and San Cipriano Church.

Going through the village on the main street, you will take a road to the right that passes under Santillana – Suances road. This path will lead you to Santa Juliana Romanesque Collegiate Church, in Santillana del Mar.
