VP26 - La Bañeza - Astorga - 24,2 km

 

Itinerary

In this last and comfortable stage of the Silver Route, you will start leaving La Bañeza and taking the road towards Santiago de Valduerna. After 2 km, you will leave the road and take a path to the right that cross the river Duerna by the bridge and then under the highway. Following this path you will get to Palacios de Valduerna. Now, you will take the path to the cemetery and going on a lane you will get to the highway and the N-VI after 8 km. Cross the two roads and keep going on parallel to the N-VI until you get to the river Turienzo, crossing it by the roman bridge. Soon after, you will pass by Celada and then, continuing straight on, you will enter Astorga (Asturica Augusta).

From here, you will follow the French Way towards Santiago de Compostela.

 

Astorga

Altitude: 869 m.

This town has 12.039 inhabitants, being the centre of the “maragatería” and the place where two pilgrims’ routes come together: the French Way and the Silver Route.

This is a town with a more than 2000 years history and whose historical centre has been declared as Spanish Heritage of Cultural Interest.

 

What can you visit?

Cathedral. It began to be built in the late 15th Century and finished in the 18th Century. It has many styles, such as Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque.

Episcopal Palace. Designed by Antonio Gaudí and built in 1887.

Roman Wall. Restored in the 13th Century.

Also you can visit the Roman Ergastulum, the Fátima Sanctuary, the Town Hall, the Sancti Spiritus Convent, San Bartolomé Church and the Chocolate Museum.
