CN10 - Castro Urdiales - Laredo - 36 Km

Itinerary

You will leave the hostel on your right and then ascend towards Campijo, where you will continue straight on until you pass under the highway. Then, you will follow the signs to the camping.

On the fork that you will find bordering the camping, you will take the path on the right. Later on, you will find another fork and turn right again, heading towards Allendelagua. Following a footpath you will get to the borough and to San Marcos Chapel.

You will leave Allendelagua turning right, heading towards the highway. Just before the underpass, you will take the path on the left, which will go parallel to the highway (on your right side). Along the way, you will arrive at another fork, turning right and continuing parallel to the highway. Soon after this, you will have to turn right again and then go through a tunnel under the highway. Next, you will be entering a village going up on the left, arriving at San Juan Evangelista Church.

From the church, you will leave Cérdigo going through the village centre heading west until you reach road N-634. On the south, you will be able to see Alto de Cerredo.  Once you get to the national road, you will cross to the other side to then go down towards the cemetery. From here, 300 m ahead you will find a porthole that gives access to a path. Do not forget to close the porthole after you pass, otherwise cattle can escape and end up on the road.

After his, you will take a path that turns left, avoiding getting closer to the cliff border. Then, you will keep walking always on the interior path, heading west and parallel to the coast. You will find a forest clearing and will have to cross another porthole to then go up a small hill towards a maritime sign. Later on, you will pass by a third porthole and continue on a paved path heading towards Islares, where you can see San Martín de Islares Church.

From the church door, you will keep going straight on to continue on a path leading to the camping. Near the camping, you will turn left on a narrow street that leads to the Vera Cruz old pilgrims’ hospital. Now, you will have to turn right and go straight on, passing by San Roque Chapel (on your left). You will finally get to the N-634 while leaving the village and bordering the river Agüera.

2 km after taking the national road in Islares, you will find the “Conservation and Exploitation Centre”. You will pass by and keep going on the national road for 500 m more, until you get the A-8 viaduct.

Those pilgrims who decide to sleep on the pilgrims’ hostel (“El Pontarrón”), should continue on the N-634 until they arrive at Pontarrón roundabout, and then ask in the bar if you can get the pilgrims’ hostel keys. You will easily find the hostel going up heading to Rioseco (2 km away).

Since this is a very short stage, some others may consider the option of continuing another 11 km more to the new pilgrims’ hostel in Liendo. Leaving behind Guriezo hostel, you have to go towards La Magdalena and then turn right to start a pronounced ascent. From here, you will pass by San Mamés Chapel and Manás, to then descend towards the beautiful Liendo Valley on small local road.

From the N-634, at the km 158, you will turn left on a byroad. You will pass by a eucalyptus plantation (on your left) and then you will find a fork with two houses on the middle (one built with stones and the other, more modern). Here, you will have to go down taking the path on the right and leaving the Pontarrón area and Llosa Mayor. You will get to a local road and will keep descending to the CA-151. Once you get to the secondary, go left and heading towards Rioseco (1,2 km away).

When you get to the first houses in the village, you will leave the road entering via the first street on the left (next to the repair shop), which will lead you across Pomar Borough to Rioseco Valley bridge. Once crossed, you will see a fork and will take the street on the right. At the end of this one, you will go straight on, passing by San Vicente Church and San Antonio and San Lorenzo Church.Leaving the chapel to your right, you will keep going on a local path, straight on, until you arrive at San Blas Chapel. Then, you will have to go on and keep straight on when you get to an intersection. On a second intersection, you will turn right and go down the CA-520 and Revilla Borough, until you get to the CA-151.

You will enter the CA-510 heading towards Ampuero, leaving the Civil Guard headquarters on the left side. Follow the secondary and you will get to Magdalena Church after crossing the river Agüera. Once on the intersection where the church is located, you will turn right to enter the byroad of Barcenillas towards Pavián Borough. Going through the valley of the river Agüera, you will get to the house of La Riera. From this house, you will turn left and soon after, you will access a path on the right surrounded by eucalyptuses. You will be heading towards San Mamés Chapel and for that, you will continue ascending on the main path. Once on the top, you will be on a small forest cleaning where you will see two cabins connected with a gable roof. Later on, you will find another cabin (on your left). Soon after passing it, you will get to a fork where you will take the path on the right. Then, you will see another fork and turn right again. 200 m away, you will see San Mamés Chapel, located in Lugarejos Borough.

After visiting the church, you can keep going on. Later on, the path leads to another forest cleaning, where you will find a fork, where you will turn right on an even path surrounded by eucalyptuses and leading towards a mountain pass. From here, you will be able to enjoy a fantastic view of Liendo Valley.

The path descends towards Liendo Valley going through the beautiful area of Manás, full of holm-oak woods, fields and cabins. Keep straight on the main path until you get to the highway, then you will start descending towards the viaduct. Under the viaduct, you will turn right on a path that leads to a byroad, leaving behind the beautiful Iseca Nueva Borough. Soon after, you will find another fork and will turn left, crossing Rocillo Stream and passing by Jesús, María and José Chapel ruins. Next, you will go through Rocillo Borough and arrive at San Agustín Chapel, to then continue via Sopeña Borough, until crossing the CA-501. Keep straight on and get to Hazas town centre, to Nuestra Señora de Liendo Church.

You will leave Hazas from Saturnino Candina Foundation to take a local road. You will border the cemetery, leaving it to the left and then crossing Rucueva Stream. After this, you will go up the hillside, leaving Alto del Mazo and Cueva del Hoyo to the left, until you reach the N-634. Once on it, you will turn left and will leave it after 1 km taking a local path to your left, next to an oak located on a pronounced curve; this will lead you to Tarrueza. Once you lose the sight of Tarrueza Church Tower, you will descend on the local road to get to the first houses in the village and then go through the tunnel under the highway, to finally arrive at Santa Cecilia Church.

After passing by the church, you will turn right on an ascending byroad. On the top of the steep slope, you will keep on the byroad turning left and heading towards Santa Ana Borough. You will get to a square and then go up via a street to the right, going to Santa Ana Church. When you get to the top, you will see the highway and, parallel to it, the national road. Cross the bridge over the highway to get to the N-634 and, after this, cross the road to go up to the left, via Calle de la Arenosa, heading towards the Tower Hotel of Laredo (place where you can admire great views of La Salvé beach, Santoña and its surroundings).

Bordering this building to the left, you will descend on a narrow street to get to the access road to Laredo. On the other side of this road, you will see the stairs to access Puerta de Bilbao, the entrance to the old town (Puebla Viaje) in medieval ages.
