CN04 - Deba - Markina-Xemein - 21,8 Km

Itinerary

You will be leaving the town taking the promenade that goes by river Deba to Mutriku bridge, where you will continue next to the N-634, towards Bilbao. After passing by the last buildings, you will turn left on a path that, after 3 km, ends on the avenue that provides access to Sasiola Hospital.

You will cross the N-634 and descend towards the convent, to then go on a path next to the river Deba. After this, you will get to the N-634 bridge and then turn right on the GI-3230, walking on it until you arrive at San Andrés de Astigarribia Church. Go back on the GI-3230 and some metres ahead, turn left and take the old road to ascend a path surrounded by pine trees that leads towards Aparain mountain pass (7,9 km).

Going on a wide path, you will start descending until you to an intersection next to Abeletxe stable, where you will follow a descending path on the left. Passing by Arrikurutz Stele, you will get to Olatz, once you have crossed the GI-3562 coming from Mutriki.

After leaving behind San Isidro Chapel, you will get to an intersection, where you will follow the path on the road that goes parallel to the river. Now, you will start ascending towards Gorostolamendi mountain pass, which divides Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa. Turn left and follow a path that goes through conifer and eucalyptus plantations, going around Jangoikomendi to go down another cement path that passes by Damukorta workers’ house and leads to Arnoate workers’ house. This is a great place to rest.

Less than 100 m away from Arnoate workers’ house, you will turn right and keep walking on forest paths, bordering the hill side, towards Sakoneta workers’ house. From here, you will take a path, continuing until you see a wide gravel road coming from Urkaregi Hill. Keep walking towards Amulategi workers’ house, where you will continue on an ascending path, surrounded by pine trees. Then, you will descend to get to another path that leaves a workers’ house on the left and ends on a cement road. Follow this road to a mountain pass, and then leave the way to turn right on a descending path. On the bottom of the valley you will take a path on the left towards Markina square, passing by some of the most significant building in the area, such as Barroeta Tower and San Miguel de Arrtxinaga Chapel.
