VP19 - Salamanca- El Cubo de la Tierra del Vino - 35 km
Itinerary
You will start this stage from Plaza Mayor, continuing via Calle de Zamora until you get close to the bull ring; then, continue on road N-630 towards Zamora. You will pass by Aldeaseca de Armuña and Castellanos de Villiquera.
Soon, you will also get to Calzada de Valdunciel, where you can visit its church, from the 12th Century and rebuilt in the 16th Century; inside, you will find a statue of Santiago as Pilgrim.
You will continue your way to El Cubo de la Tierra del Vino, passing by close to Topas Prison. Later on, you will arrive at the first village in Zamora province.
El Cubo de la Tierra del Vino
Altitude: 840 m
El Cubo de la Tierra del Vino is the first village in Zamora crossed by the Silver Route. This place is located on the meseta and it has almost half a thousand inhabitants. Even though its name makes reference to “the land of wine”, there are few vineyards left in this area, since there was a terrible phylloxera plague in the 19th Century; there are some wineries left, though.
The village is located on a place that once was a Roman Mansio known as Sibariam.
What can you visit?
Santo Domingo de Guzmán Church, which is a temple rebuilt on the 40’s, still preserving its original bell gable. In front of it, you will see a calvary from 2005 with a replica of Santiago as Pilgrim (from Santa Marta de Tera) and a plaque of Ramos de Castro Foundation that summarize the story of this village in the pilgrimage route. It is also recommendable to visit the traditional wineries in this village.
Rest areas
Next to the church there is a park where you can enjoy some shade, and on the village exit there is an area with shade, fountains and benches.
