As the tradition says, Virgin Mary reached port on A Barca Sanctuary (Muxía) to encourage Santiago the Apostle in his preaching around the Northwest of Iberian Peninsula. That is why this is such an important place and it is always included on the Way of St. James since Medieval Ages.
The distance between Fisterra and A Barca is 31 km. The first place you will pass by is San Martiño de Duio, where you can visit the ruins of the long gone city of Dugium. According to medieval tradition, here was the living place of the Roman legate who received Santiago’s disciples when they asked for the authorization to bury the remains of the Apostle.
The Way goes across villages, fields, woods and close to the sea, passing by beaches like O Rostro and Lires small tidal river. Along this route, you will see some notable churches such as Leocadia de Frixe and Santa María de Morquintián.
The last effort before arriving at Muxía will be the ascent to As Aferroas hill (289m). Lourido beach leads to the town of the same name, located on a beautiful coastal landscape. Founded on the 12th Century, Muxía represents a blast of colour every July because of the Carmen festivities and its great maritime parade. The two most characteristic activities in town are fishing and craftsmanship.
From Muxía, the Sanctuary of A Nosa Señora da Barca is easily reachable. You will get to it bordering the Corpiño Mountain via Camiño da Pel (The Skin Way).
