CF25 - Astorga - Rabanal del Camino - 20,6 km

Itinerary

You will start the route from Astorga Cathedral and leave the town carefully crossing the N-VI. You will continue on a boulevard where you can find some hostels. Once on the outskirts of Astorga, you will see the chapel of Ecce Homo de Valdeviejas, built over a well where, it is said, the Virgin Mary miraculously saved a child.

After crossing the highway by an elevated walkway, the Way takes a path on the right of the road and comes back to it to cross the bridge over the river Jerga, soon before arriving at Murias de Rechivaldo, the first “Maragato” village on the Way of St. James.

Leaving Murias, you will keep walking next to a path. Ahead, you will be able to see León Mountains and will start a mild but constant climb along the rest of the stretch. Another option is to go on the road to Castrillo de los Polvazares, a really picturesque village; after the visit, you would be able to go back to the point where the passage joins the intersection and continues next to the road that leads to Santa Catalina de Somoza.  Before arriving, there is a rest area. Keep going on to the next village, while the hill gets bushier on both sides of the way.

A short descent will take you to El Ganso, which you will leave taking the passage again. The mountains are really close and the vegetation gets bushier and bushier, and you will keep walking next to border of a pine wood reforestation. When you get to a roads fork, you will go through an oak forest and cross a wood footbridge over the river of Rabanal Viejo. Soon, you will get to the passage parallel to the road to Rabanal del Camino. The ascent becomes quite harder. On the left of the road you will see the old Pilgrim’s Oak, also known as “Carballo de Fonso Pedrero”. Once you get to Santo Cristo de la Vera Cruz chapel, the way leaves the road and goes up Calle Real, in Rabanal del Camino.
