CF11 - Santo Domingo de la Calzada - Belorado - 22,7 km

Itinerary

You will leave Santo Domingo crossing the bridge over the river Oja, passing by a simple wooden cross known as “Cruz de los Valientes” (Brave Men Cross), which reminds the scenery of a legend about battles between knights.

The Way continues heading towards Grañón hill, also called “Mirabel”, which watches over the county. It is known, in 10th Century there was a castle on the top. The pilgrims access the village through Calle Santiago and they can find a great altarpiece in San Juan Bautista Church, where you will be able to see the best art of the Renaissance.

2 km away from the town centre and towards south, you will find Nuestra Señora de Carrasquedo Chapel. This building is baroque (late 17th Century) and has the biggest collection of pictorial votive offerings still available in La Rioja.

Leaving Grañón, you will go down and pass by the ruins of an old wall to then cross the river Villar Medio. Having walked half the distance to Redecilla, a sign will indicate you are entering Castilla y León. On the South, you will be able to see Ayago Mountains, separated from Demanda Range by the river Tirón. The relief does not show great changes regarding the previous stage and the undulating dry lands dominate this area.

Once you get to Redecilla del Camino, you will have to cross the road and pass by the Pilgrim’s Information Office to go on Calle Mayor. Leaving the village and before crossing the river Reláchigo, you will cross cautiously the road and take the soil path parallel to it until you arrive at Castidelgado. After this, you will come back to the road parallel to the N-120 and, having crossed the river San Julián, you will separate from the N-120 taking the local road that goes to Viloria de Rioja, hometown of Santo Domingo de la Calzada. From Viloria, another local road joins the N-120. The Way of St. James goes now on a path next to it and, after crossing the streams of Acebasco y Villamor, it reaches Villamayor del Río.

Again next to the national road, you will continue towards the entrance of Belorado, where a path commences being parallel to Trambasaguas stream and passing by the pilgrim’s hostel. The hill where the ruins of the castle are located rises on your right. After crossing the stream, you will get to Santa María Church.
